CEPP Works to Address Unique Needs

The Latest from CEPP May 2023
In recognition of National Mental Health Awareness Month and to belatedly celebrate Mother’s Day, we focus this month’s newsletter on CEPP’s work to promote evidence-based and research-informed policies and practices that improve the outcomes of unique populations involved in the criminal justice system, especially mothers and people with mental health concerns.
Over 40% of people in state and local jails have been diagnosed with a mental disorder. The number is even higher for women: around 65% of women in federal and state prisons and local jails are reported to have a mental health disorder. Mother’s Day is a difficult day for many women who are incarcerated: over half of all women in prisons are mothers, and incredibly, 80% of women in jails are mothers, including many who are awaiting trial and not yet convicted.
